On Monday the strikers, including health and education workers, enforced a virtual cut-off of Balochistan from the rest of the country with a blockade of the main highways. A sit-down protest was held outside the provincial assembly in the capital Quetta with other demonstrations held across the province. Education workers have said they will boycott high-school exams scheduled to begin on April 10. A polio vaccination campaign due this week was also postponed as workers conducting mobile vaccination campaigns joined the strike.

Premier Marshall was the first person in the state to be vaccinated, alongside Chief Health Officer Nicola Spurrier. Mr Marshall expressed his gratitude to those administering the vaccinations and encouraged people to come and get it. “I’m really encouraging everyone to get out, get that vaccination, and keep us enjoying a beautiful, beautiful quality of life, relative to everybody else in the world,” he said.

South Australia hopeful on lifting Greater Brisbane border ban

South Australia Premier Steven Marshall says he is hopeful the state can lift its border restrictions with Greater Brisbane in the coming days. “But we don’t want to go one or two days too early and then have a catastrophe on our hands,” he said on Wednesday. “South Australia has done extraordinarily well.”

South Australia to close border with NSW on New Year s Day

The continued spread of coronavirus has led the South Australian government to reimpose a hard border with New South Wales. From 12.01am January 1, people from NSW will be prevented from accessing the state except for several exceptions, South Australia Premier Steven Marshall said. “We have received advice that would suggest that we need to strengthen our border restrictions with NSW,” he said. “Only South Australians returning, people relocating permanently or essential workers will be exempt from this arrangement.” He also said a 100-kilometre buffer zone would apply to people living in border communities, and people travelling to South Australia through NSW would be exempt, provided they do not stop in NSW. Returning South Australians or those people relocating will need to undertake 14 days of mandatory self-isolation.
