After a tumultuous year caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Illinois colleges are weighing whether to require students to be vaccinated for the fall semester.
The picture should become clearer as the semester nears, especially if the COVID-19 vaccines are granted full FDA approval.

Several 4-year colleges have already announced that all returning students to campus would be required to be vaccinated, including DePaul University, Loyola University and Northwestern University.
At Northwestern, faculty, staff and visitors will not be required to get the vaccine, Provost Kathleen Hagerty announced in a community email.

Many Illinois school districts suspended standardized testing for much of the pandemic year. Carbondale Elementary School District 95, a 1,500-student district in southern Illinois, did not.
Janice Pavelonis, the assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction at Carbondale, was among the district leaders who saw testing as essential especially now. She was hired in 2018 to address student learning gaps and train teachers, and in July, she will become the district superintendent.
During the 2018-2019 school year, the district started to test students in reading and math three times a year and to create individualized learning plans between assessments. Before the pandemic hit, state test results showed gains in reading and math across the district, including among Black and Latino students.

Megan Ryan grew up visiting law offices because of her uncle being a Winchester-based attorney and her mother being a legal secretary.
But the path to being an attorney and following in their footsteps as she graduated from Winchester High School in 2014 didn’t really appeal to her so she thought.
Wienhoff asked them ultimately to dream bigger.
Officials cut the ribbon on that dream Thursday, the 19,750 square-foot, $7.5 million Kreher Agriculture Center that provides cutting-edge technology to students, like combine and welding simulators and state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories and features an animal science pavilion. This is not what I remember a college building to look like, joked Wienoff, a Springfield certified public accountant. This is truly high tech.
Demonica Kemper Architects, LLC, of Chicago designed the building. Hanson Professional Services, Martin Engineering Co. and Massie Massie & Associates, all of Springfield, were also involved with the project. Evans Construction Co. of Springfield was the general contractor.

Walter Ottis Wood, Jr., 74, of Baker City Oregon lost his long battle against cancer, on April 28, 2021, at St. Luke s Medical Center in Boise, ID. Walt was born January 9, 1947, in Alton, Illinois, the only child of Walter and Stella Wood of Shipman, Illinois. He attended local grade school and Southwestern High School making many life long friends. He delighted in working on local farms, mowing and cleaning in the town cemetery (his father was the town s mayor), hunting raccoons at night and squirrels during the days in the woods and growing up in a caring, Christian community of family and friends.
