Paul Simon Institute to host virtual talk with Decatur mayor
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will host a virtual conversation with Julie Moore Wolfe, the mayor of Decatur, Illinois, on Wednesday, May 12.
Moore Wolfe and institute director John Shaw will talk about the mayor’s career in economic development and politics and the challenges she and her city have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The discussion is part of the institute’s Meet the Mayor series of virtual conversations with leaders of Illinois communities.

A team of students from Southern Illinois University Carbondale is looking at using the power of the sun, combined with iron-based nanomaterials, to destroy the harmful effects of algae blooms afflicting Campus Lake, a common problem throughout the country.

Summer camps for children are scheduled to return to Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Touch of Nature Environmental Center in 2021, with an expanded lineup for younger kids.
The experiential learning center plans to offer a dozen summer camp opportunities for children ages 4 to 13.
After a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the camps are set to return with enhanced safety and social distancing measures in compliance with state and SIU guidelines, including group size limitations.
Each of the camps has a specific theme and registration is underway online.
All of the camps will be at the Touch of Nature Environmental Center, which is located about 8 miles south of Carbondale on Giant City Road.
