SIU law school professor named Fulbright Specialist

CARBONDALE, Ill. Southern Illinois University Carbondale has been long known for its global reach, including welcoming its first international student in 1947. Christopher Behan, a professor with the SIU School of Law, is continuing the relationship with his recent selection as a Fulbright Specialist.
Behan learned in February that he was selected for the specialist program, which “pairs highly qualified U.S. academics and professionals with host institutions abroad to share their expertise, strengthen institutional linkages, hone their skills, gain international experience and learn about other cultures,” according to the organization’s website. The program has host institutions in more than 150 countries, and projects generally last two to six weeks, although specialists are encouraged to continue working with their host institutions in the years after t
CARBONDALE, IL A mathematics professor and researcher at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC) is under federal indictment for grant fraud. Mingqing Xiao of Makanda, Illinois, is accused of fraudulently obtaining $151,099 in federal grant money from the National Science Foundation (NSF) by concealing support he was receiving from an arm of the Chinese government and a Chinese public university. Xiao is charged with two counts of wire fraud and one count of making a false statement.
The prosecution is part of the Justice Department s ongoing China Initiative. Led by the Department s National Security Division (NSD), the China Initiative is an effort to safeguard American intellectual property and research programs and counter the multi-faceted threat posed by the PRC government to U.S. national security.

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KFVS) - The Sunset Concert Series at Southern Illinois University Carbondale is extending its hiatus through 2021.
According to SIUC, the joint decision to cancel the free concert series for the second consecutive year was made to help ensure the health and safety of the public in the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
They said SIUC and the City of Carbondale continues to follow State of Illinois mitigation guidelines. Currently, regulations don’t allow large concerts.
The Justice Department charged a math professor and university researcher, Mingqing Xiao, on Wednesday with wire fraud over allegations that he hid his Chinese government funding while obtaining funding from the National Science Foundation.
The Southern Illinois University-Carbondale professor, Mingqing Xiao, worked in the mathematics department since 2000 and obtained the Chinese funding starting in 2018, the Justice Department said.
China has targeted research throughout the economy from corn growers to cancer researchers. Last year, Dr. Lauer said, more than 90% of the scientists under investigation had received support from China.
