SIU’s Camp Little Giant resumes in 2021 on limited basis

CARBONDALE, Ill. Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Camp Little Giant, the first university-affiliated camp for children and adults with differing abilities, is back this summer. SIU’s Touch of Nature Environmental Center had to cancel its acclaimed residential camps in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Camp Little Giant is returning on a smaller scale, offering two day camps in July that will implement special safety precautions, including social distancing, in compliance with state and SIU protocols.
Dyna Camp
Dyna Camp, for youths ages 8-17 with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit disorder, will take place July 5-9. Participants will enjoy hiking, canoeing, kayaking, archery, arts and crafts, games and other activities.

This scientific advancement can lead to the development of new genetic markers that will help scientists distinguish between pallid sturgeon and the shovelnose sturgeon, another sturgeon species that looks similar but is more common.
In a genetics breakthrough that may help detect and conserve one of North America’s most endangered fish species, researchers from the U.S. Geological Survey’s Columbia Environmental Research Center and Southern Illinois University Carbondale recently produced offspring of endangered pallid sturgeon with DNA from only a single parent. These offspring are not ‘clones’, which are exact copies of an individual, they have only half the DNA from just the female parent.
Virtual Little Grassy Literary Festival 2021 features readings, discussions

CARBONDALE, Ill. The venerable Little Grassy Literary Festival at Southern Illinois University Carbondale will take on a different twist this year while still featuring a variety of renowned literary authors.
This year’s event, which begins Monday, April 5, and runs through April 9, will feature six authors and six poets who will read their work during 5 p.m. readings every night. There will also be three 11 a.m. panels where the audience can ask authors how they created their work or how they became successful writers. An open mic is set for 7 to 9 p.m. April 9 for anyone interested in sharing their work.
SIU will celebrate diversity during International Festival 2021

CARBONDALE, Ill. Southern Illinois University Carbondale will celebrate the diversity and inclusiveness that is intrinsic to the campus and represented throughout the region during International Festival 2021 next week.
“Celebrating Diversity: Together and Stronger” is the theme for the festival Monday through Friday, April 5-9, featuring a mixture of live and virtual events. All of the events are free and open to the public.
“Though International Festival may look and feel different this year, the virtual events planned and organized by the International Student Council will allow the entire world to join our celebration,” said Andrew D. St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank CEO will discuss U.S. economy and monetary policy

CARBONDALE, Ill. Noted economist and scholar James “Jim” Bullard, the president and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, will discuss the nation’s economy during a virtual discussion April 8 hosted by Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute.
Bullard has served as the president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis since 2008. In his post, Bullard participates in the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee, which meets regularly to set the direction of the nation’s monetary policy.
