18 JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas, (Jan. 20, 2021) Brooke Army Medical Center honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during a live virtual presentation on BAMC’s Facebook page Jan. 14.
The Baptist minister and activist became the spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. He is best known for advancing civil rights through nonviolence and civil disobedience, inspired by his Christian beliefs and the nonviolent activism of Mahatma Gandhi.
The national recurring theme of Martin Luther King Jr. Day is “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On, Not A Day Off!” It calls upon the American people to engage in public service and promote peaceful social change.

I became a political activist in a school that nobody in their right mind would ever consider as a potential springboard for political activism. My college, St. Johnâs of Annapolis, was a long enduring academic experiment that featured four years of focusing on the classics of literature, philosophy, science, mathematics and languages. It was probably the only place in the world that; you had to memorize propositions of Apollonius and Ptolemy. We had 300 students whose campus was across the street from the Naval Academy. When the Cadets marched by, they would sing, âLook sharp, every time you shave.â Lunchtime was bursting with people quoting Kant or Aristotle.

Holiday plans faced major disruption in 2020 and thanks to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, 2021 has so far offered more of the same.
On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, his legacy is traditionally honored with parades and service events across the country, but the pandemic has rendered in-person gatherings such as these unsafe. Even so, you can commemorate the civil rights icon in several different ways from the safety of home this year, such as by studying his speeches or virtually volunteering with a nonprofit. Here are just a few ideas.
When Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stayed in St. Augustine in 1964, he was shuffled from house to house to maintain his safety; held strategy meetings with local civil rights leaders; and stirred crowds at churches that still exist in the city today.
He planned to use St. Augustine as a platform to bring about national change for civil rights, but became part of a movement that sought a local transformation. While the effort sparked obvious changes, officials say work still remains.
Dr. Benjamin Chavis, former leader of the NAACP and current president of the National Newspaper Publishers Association, worked for King as a youth coordinator for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. He became involved when he was 14.
