South Dakota Agriculture Groups Divided On Ag DENR Merger Proposal

3 months ago in Agriculture Photo: WNAX Agriculture groups in South Dakota have different takes on Governor Kristi Noem’s plan to merge the State Department of Agriculture with Environment and Natural Resources. The South Dakota Corn Grower’s Association has not yet taken a position according to President Scott Stahl. Also not taking an official position yet is the South Dakota Soybean Association and the State Cattlemen’s Association. The State Farm Bureau however is in favor of the merger according to President Scott VanderWal. South Dakota Farmers Union’s lobbyist Mitch Richter says his group is opposing the merger.

4 months ago in Agriculture Photo: WNAX One area South Dakota Corn Grower Association members will be focusing on with state legislators when they convene in January will be property taxes. Incoming President, Bridgewater area farmer Scott Stahl says what happens with property taxes is on their radar screen and something they’re focusing on. He says another area they’d like to work with state legislators on is the possibility of developing a low carbon fuel standard as that would help corn farmers capitalize on the corn they grow that’s turned into renewable fuel. Stahl says not only do they want to work with state lawmakers on that issue but also see an opportunity to work with the incoming Biden administration as he’s focusing on climate change.

South Dakota Corn Receives Conservation Award From The NRCS

4 months ago in Agriculture tomr Photo: WNAX The South Dakota Corn Grower’s Association and Corn Utilization Council at their annual meeting this week were presented with the South Dakota Excellence in Cooperative Conservation Award. NRCS State Conservationist Jeff Zimprich presented the honor to the associations. South Dakota Corn’s Executive Director Lisa Richardson says one of the major issues they’ve worked with NRCS on is soil health. She says Corn grower members have been sequestering carbon in their soil in order to benefit the environment. Richardson says corn growers have also partnered with NRCS and Pheasants Forever to address salinity issues in the state.
