A Buck A Head: Book about Beef Checkoff now available

A new book describing the events leading up to the Beef Checkoff’s implementation and outlining a vast number of happenings since then has caused quite a stir. Livestock journalist Leesa Zalesky teamed up with former Cattlemen’s Beef Board Communications Director Diane Gumaer to produce a comprehensive textbook style publication that takes the reader through a timeline of events beginning with the rise of Thomas Wilson, a meat packing giant and one of the founders of the American Meat Institute, and ending with details about the checkoff referendum drive and controversial political statements made by the Beef Checkoff’s main contractor, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association. The 230 plus pages of “A Buck A Head, The Beef Checkoff: Did Greed, Envy and a Thirst for Power Hijack Beef Research and Promotion?” include information from dozens of meat industry leaders past and present.

Cattle Industry Celebrates May Beef Month

2 weeks ago in Agriculture Photo: WNAX May is Beef Month and it will be a busy time of beef promotions for the industry. The South Dakota Beef Industry Council is highlighting the state’s cattle producers and the 4 million head of cattle they raise. Council President Laurie Johnson says it is also a great time to thank them for the positive contribution they make to the economy. The Council is launching several beef promotions including their newest “Reclaim the Summer” campaign encouraging everyone to get out and grill beef this summer. Johnson says they have other promotions planning such as the Sioux Falls Storm Hall of Fame Game.

SD Beef Industry Council encourages people to Reclaim the Summer as part of May Beef Month

Pierre, SD, USA / DRGNews May 5, 2021 | 6:27 AM South Dakota is home to nearly 14,000 beef farms and ranches caring for 4 million head of cattle, outnumbering state residents 4.5 to 1. May is Beef Month and the South Dakota Beef Industry Council believes this is the perfect time to highlight all our hardworking beef farmers and ranchers and all they do to bring a high-quality protein to the table. Governor Kristi Noem signed the proclamation officially declaring May as Beef Month in South Dakota on April 26, 2021. The SDBIC worked alongside the South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources to organize the proclamation as summer continues to be the peak season for beef sales with an average of approximately 30% of yearly beef dollars captured between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
