DINWIDDIE COUNTY, Va. When a February ice storm hit Virginia, tens of thousands of Southside Electric Cooperative (SEC) members lost power. For thousands of members, that outage lasted more than a week.
The CBS 6 Problem Solvers heard from countless frustrated members who were upset with SEC leaders.
They wondered how 81 percent of SEC s members could lose power and be out for so long and asked the Problem Solvers to investigate a number of questions about preventative maintenance, vegetation management, and compensation for board members and the president.

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Since Februaryâs ice storm, 242 complaints from Southside Electric Cooperative members have been reported to the State Corporation Commission. The SCC is now doing a thorough review of Southside Electricâs entire response to the storm.
A week and a half after that ice storm pummeled central Virginia, NBC12 reported more than 13,000 Southside Electric customers were still without electricity and heat, in many cases. By that same time, almost all Dominion Energy customers had their power restored, along with most other providers across the state, according to the poweroutage.us website, which tracks outages nationwide.
CREWE - As of Feb. 25, 2021, Southside Electric Cooperative (SEC) has restored power to more than 98% of members who were impacted by Winter Storm Shirley.

NOTTOWAY COUNTY, Va. While the lights are finally back on for most families in rural Virginia, they still have a lot of catching up to do after weeks without power.
Volunteers with Mount Gilead church in Chesterfield organized an outreach event at Nottoway High School in Blackstone Saturday.
The congregation handed out meals, water, and essential items to folks whose food may have gone bad because of an outage or because they had to spend extra money to keep a generator going.

CREWE, Va. Southside Electric Cooperative (SEC) says they have restored power to more than 98% of members who were impacted by two ice storms less than a week a part.
Jeff Edwards, the President of SEC, said the storm damaged most of the utility company s infrastructure. This storm took down 80% of our system in a matter of hours, said Edwards. Restoration from such devastation takes time, and the line crews on the ground have worked as safely and quickly as possible in the face of incredible challenges.â
