Event highlights the value and importance of family and consumer sciences education and its educators

On Feb. 10, the Maine Association of Family Consumer Sciences (MAFCS) will celebrate National Family & Consumer Sciences Educator Day 2021. This celebration showcases the value and importance of family and consumer sciences education and its educators. FCS education takes place throughout all 16 of Maine’s counties in a variety of public and private grammar, middle and high schools, college, university and community settings across all generations.
“National Family & Consumer Sciences Educator Day is one way to pay tribute to the positive impact that family and consumer sciences educators have on individuals, families, and communities every day,” notes Stephanie Knight, MAFCS board member. SOUTH PORTLAND The coronavirus pandemic may be hampering efforts by teens statewide to participate in extracurricular activities, but the robotics team at South Portland High School isn’t letting the COVID-19 pandemic hold them back.
The team, made of up 11 high school students, participates in annual competitions organized by For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), a global organization started by inventor Dean Kamen in 1989 to encourage interest in the fields of science and technology.

JEFFERSON – David Linscott Roberts, 87, of Jefferson, passed away Jan. 23, 2021, at Mayo Clinic Hospital following a 16 year journey with dementia. David had been residing for the recent past in Chatfield, Minn., receiving love and care from his devoted family.
Born with instinct, drive, and innate capabilities, David was very accomplished yet humble, diplomatic, and loyal. He routinely deflected attention from himself and used his gifts as a “people person” to make everyone else in the room welcome and comfortable. David ensured that all had a chance to speak and, better yet, to laugh. He had a compliment handy for anyone and everyone. Ever balanced and positive, David Roberts was beloved by many. Jen Ellis credits a South Portland home economics teacher with giving her the skills to sew the mittens the Vermont senator made famous at President Biden s inauguration.

Sanders and his mittens went viral and drew national attention to Jen Ellis, a South Portland High School graduate who credits Jeannette Collett, her home economics teacher at Mahoney Middle School, with teaching her to sew.
