Zeaborn Ship Management spokesperson Andrew Leahy, who was acting on behalf of the ship’s owners, said the group were still waiting for confirmation to hear when the vessel could leave. In the meantime, health officials were checking on the crew daily and doing regular temperature checks, he said, while the ships existing Covid-19 outbreak management protocols were being followed to minimise the risk of further transmission. Health wise, the crew were faring well, he said, adding that their family had been notified about the situation and were being kept informed of any new developments. Two of the infected mariners were taken to Southland Hospital for assessment on Wednesday, but did not need to be admitted and were returned to the ship.
“If the captain does need to return to the Mattina urgently, plans are in place to manage this securely, the ministry said. The three were transported under the same strict infection prevention and control procedures, including the use of full PPE, regularly used to transport people arriving from overseas to MIQ facilities, the ministry said. Southern DHB medical officer of health Dr Susan Jack said the board would not say where the captain was staying, citing privacy and safety concerns. “There is no public health risk to the community relating to this,” she said. All crewmen who have tested positive for Covid-19 will remain in isolation on the ship to maintain minimum functions in the port.

Three new MIQ cases, three more mariners infected
There are three new Covid cases to report today in managed isolation.
There are also three new cases of the virus among crew on the Mattina container ship quarantined at Bluff as at 9am today. One further result is currently under investigation due to a high CT value; and three more have serological evidence of past infection and therefore are not deemed infectious at this stage, the Ministry of Health said in today s update. Two further positive results aboard the Mattina were reported after 9am and will be officially added to our case tally in tomorrow s update. We are reporting these out of cycle because of the high public interest in the Mattina.
