Batch Of Medical Oxygen For Critical Covid Patients Reaches Telangana From Odisha Apr 27, 2021, 13:26 IST Telangana received the first batch of tankers loaded with medical oxygen on Monday. The oxygen has been brought from the Rourkela Steel Plant of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), Odisha for Covid-19 patients. The empty tankers were specially flown from Begumpet to Odisha in two C17 cargo aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) on Friday. Within three days, five tankers loaded with medical oxygen reached Telangana, thus reducing the travel time by three to four days. The five tankers reached Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS), Gachibowli, District Hospital, King Kothi, Chest Hospital, Erragadda and Government hospitals in Khammam, Karimnagar and area hospital in Cherlapally on Monday night.

HYDERABAD: Nearly 40 per cent of all critical Covid-19 patients in various intensive care units (ICU) across city hospitals are obese and doctors treating such patients across Telangana have said the high risk of severe Covid disease associated with obesity is also reflecting in the number of deaths. According to the recent National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) report, Hyderabad city alone has 48.7 per cent women and 33.1 per cent men under the overweight category, way higher than the numbers in Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Ahmedabad, or Chennai. Across Telangana, 28 per cent of women and 24 per cent of men are overweight or obese. “In ICU wards at least 40 per cent of patients fall in the category of obese or have other co-morbidities along with obesity” said a top resident doctor at Gandhi Hospital. At Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, one of the designated hospitals for Covid-19, handling mild to moderate cases, numbers are slightly lower.

The Health Minister told reporters that a total of 10,000 oxygen beds are available across the state. He pointed out that when the pandemic broke out, the state had only 1,770 oxygen beds but the government took steps on a war footing to ramp up the numbers. The Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad has 600 ICU beds. He claimed that it is the only hospital in the country which has all its beds as ICU beds. A decision has been taken to provide oxygen supply to another 400 beds at the Gandhi Hospital.
