Labour has today announced plans to give all workers security at work by creating a single status of âworkerâ for all but the genuinely self-employed, with rights from day one of employment.
A single status of âworkerâ would replace the three existing employment categories and remove qualifying periods for basic rights and protections to give workers day one rights in the job.
As part of Labourâs plan to end insecure employment, all workers would receive rights and protections including Statutory Sick Pay, National Minimum Wage entitlement, holiday pay, paid parental leave, and protection against unfair dismissal.

Angela Rayner MP, Deputy Leader of the Labour Party and Shadow Chancellor for the Duchy of Lancaster, responding to Lord Geidtâs report finding that Boris Johnson acted âunwiselyâ over flat refurbishment, said:
âThe Conservatives think itâs one rule for them and another for everyone else. Throughout this pandemic, the Government has shown utter disregard for taxpayersâ money, using the public purse as a personal cashpoint.
âItâs staggering that the Prime Minister could rack up a £200,000 bill for a luxury refurbishment yet have no knowledge of how it was eventually paid. And with the charge sheet against the Health Secretary getting longer and longer, Boris Johnson needs to explain why the public should trust him to lead such a major government department.
