Federal safety regulators descended on the Gopher Resource lead smelter in Tampa, reviewing company documents, collecting dust samples and hooking up workers to monitoring devices so that air quality could be measured. Inspectors arrived Monday and stayed all week.
They combed through the plant, where hundreds of workers have been exposed to high levels of the neurotoxin and other chemicals.

It isn’t every day that Republican Rep. Sam Graves picks up his cell phone and hears from a Cabinet secretary let alone a Democrat.
But the conservative Missouri congressman who serves as ranking member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure has been struck by how often he and Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have talked about infrastructure since the former mayor and presidential candidate was confirmed two months ago.
“He calls my cell phone and I have his,” said Graves, who said he was surprised by how “accessible” the secretary has been. “It certainly is just nice to be able to talk to somebody and talk about that different points of view and the pros and the cons without getting into an argument and just shutting off and then starting in with name calling. … That is very refreshing.”

After missing a March 15 presidential deadline, the development of an emergency temporary standard for COVID-19 has now been put on hold by Labor Secretary Marty Walsh, as the urgency for its issuance declines among rising vaccination numbers and the political will for its implementation has thinned, according to media reports and expert analysis.
Walsh asked OSHA, which was charged with considering whether an ETS was necessary in an executive order from President Joe Biden in January, to put the process on hold so that relevant materials could be updated to reflect the latest scientific analysis of the state of the disease, according to a Bloomberg Law article. Walsh ordered the update based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analysis and the latest information regarding the state of vaccinations and coronavirus variants, according to the article.
