The Edinburgh Festival Fringe needs urgent help to get back on its feet this summer - Brian Ferguson

Submitting. Over the last week I have felt like I was working in an upside down office as I tried to make sense of the bewildering landscape Scottish cultural venues and festivals have found themselves in. The good news is that a reopening date of 17 May is firmly on the horizon. Attractions like the National Museum of Scotland, Kelvingrove and V&A Dundee have already returned, along with bars, restaurants and hotels. A return to normality is a real prospect for many. Galleries: Celebrating Archie Brennan, innovator, pop artist, adventurer and former Mr Scotland

Archie Brennan (1931-2009), tapestry artist, formative director of Edinburgh’s Dovecot Studio’s modern era, and sometime pop artist of the textile world, was an innovator whose prolific output belied a life spent teaching and promoting tapestry worldwide. Well known amongst tapestry aficionados, his light faded at home when he left Scotland in the 1970s to pursue his passion for tapestry abroad. Innovatively using photographic and mass media for images for his work, including those of Muhammad Ali and Princess Diana, and questioning the notion that a weaver should only copy paintings, he packed up his portable loom and travelled the world, a long way from his Edinburgh origins just half a mile from the Dovecot’s original studios in Corstorphine.

It has been urged to repatriate its collection of Benin bronzes amid a groundswell of support for making amends for historical wrongdoing. Thousands of brass plaques and carved ivory tusks were looted by British soldiers in 1897 from Benin, a city in Nigeria, before being distributed to museums and private collections. The National Museum of Scotland has 74 objects in its collection, including a mask, altar piece and plaque.
