Forever ago, in March 2020, a press agent handed me tickets before a show and said, “Ninety minutes, no intermission, thank God.”
But those days of durational drama are gone. The pandemic has been whittling down running times as if attention spans, like paper towels, were running short. Even “Angels in America” caught the disease, showing up online in October at 50 minutes instead of the customary seven hours.
Theater to Stream: Pride Goes Online
Highlights include the latest edition of “Broadway Bares,” Jackie Sibblies Drury’s “Marys Seacole” and a new play by Caryl Churchill.

You have to love any event featuring a hair team like the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS fund-raiser “Broadway Bares,” which has been bringing on the saucy and the naughty since 1992. A return to form is expected in 2022, but for now, this year’s edition, “Twerk From Home,” will be virtual, promising a dozen new videos and 170 scantily clad dancers.
‘Our Town’ with All-Asian American Cast

The National Asian American Theatre Company will present a virtual reading of “Our Town” by Thornton Wilder with an all-Asian American cast for one night only, Wednesday May 19, at 8 p.m. Eastern/5 p.m. Pacific, in celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
The proceeds of this reading will benefit the company. Yumi Iwama, who portrayed Emily Webb in NAATCO’s 1994 production of the play, proposed the reading to NAATCO, following her recent interview with
The New York Times:
“The idea that I was this Asian actress playing this iconic American role was just daunting. I remember being in kind of a high emotional state throughout the run, because I really wanted to do it well. And I loved Emily. She didn’t have these issues of ‘Do I belong here?’ She was part of this town, part of this community. She just lives her life with abandon in a way that I never felt I had the license to.
