Pressure mounts to reopen Brexit deal

BBC News By Douglas Fraser Published image captionSmall firms, like shellfish exporters, are considerably worse off than larger ones Meat and seafood, particularly exports by small firms, are paying the highest price for the Brexit deal, and pressure is growing to lighten the burden of paperwork. German businesses that are used to UK supply are now paying higher costs and looking elsewhere for more reliable partners. Australia is set to be the next UK trade deal: future food standards are being negotiated behind closed doors. Four months into Britain's break from the European customs union with its single market, and on 1 May, it becomes fully legal.

Yorkshire farmer shoots dog which savaged six lambs 27 April 2021 | The farmer shot the dog after it ran havoc on his land and killed six lambs (Stock photo) A farmer in West Yorkshire has shot and killed an out-of-control dog after it savaged six of his lambs, police have confirmed. The Hebden Bridge farmer shot the loose dog following a livestock worrying incident on Wednesday last week (21 April). Six lambs had already been killed by the dog before the farmer intervened to prevent further loss of life. By law, dogs must be controlled so that they do not scare or disturb livestock or wildlife.

Grazed grasslands 'play big role' in UK's net zero goals

Grazed grasslands 'play big role' in UK's net zero goals 27 April 2021 | The sheep sector has welcomed Natural England’s study which reviewed the carbon storage impact on UK habitats Sheep farmers have welcomed a new report that says grasslands have a significant role to play in achieving the UK's net zero target. Natural England's study looked at how UK landscapes can contribute to carbon management, while also offering landscape diversity and opportunities for nature. The newly-released report identified peatlands and native woodlands as habitats with the greatest capacity to store carbon. But it also recognised that many other habitats, including grasslands, can play a major role towards the UK reaching its net zero target by 2050.

British farmers support burgeoning bird population

British farmers play their part in supporting bird populations on-farm (Pic: Marlies Nicolai) A SUCCESSFUL 'Big Farmland Bird Count' by the nation's farmers has demonstrated their commitment to conservation efforts as part of their everyday farming methods. The farmland bird count was completed in February this year with a 65% increase in actual individual counts submitted compared to 2020, which in itself was a record year. The area covered by the count was more than twice the area in 2020, with significantly more birds counted. The National Sheep Association's policy and technical officer, Sean Riches, commented: “Lamb production supports rural communities as well as being a key player in delivering environmental stewardship schemes. Sheep can be effectively used for conservation grazing in areas that would be difficult to manage otherwise due to poor land quality or terrain. The use of livestock (particularly sheep) for conservation grazing is commonplace in national parks and ensures protection and access of these areas for the general public.

Why Scots farmers need solution to lambs lost to sea eagles

Why Scots farmers need solution to lambs lost to sea eagles >More in © Blickwinkel/Alamy Stock Photo Every spring farmers and crofters in parts of Scotland face the unsustainable situation of white-tailed eagles preying on healthy newborn lambs to feed their young. NFU Scotland (NFUS) has demanded that the Scottish government’s nature agency NatureScot now takes real and meaningful action to control the birds that have come to see livestock as a food source. White-tailed eagles, also known as sea eagles, were hunted to extinction in the UK in the early 20th century, but efforts to reintroduce the iconic birds to the west coast of Scotland in the 1970s and east coast in 2007 have been successful.
