The sheep sector has welcomed Natural England’s study which reviewed the carbon storage impact on UK habitats
Sheep farmers have welcomed a new report that says grasslands have a significant role to play in achieving the UK's net zero target.
Natural England's study looked at how UK landscapes can contribute to carbon management, while also offering landscape diversity and opportunities for nature.
The newly-released report identified peatlands and native woodlands as habitats with the greatest capacity to store carbon.
But it also recognised that many other habitats, including grasslands, can play a major role towards the UK reaching its net zero target by 2050.

The farmland bird count was completed in February this year with a 65% increase in actual individual counts submitted compared to 2020, which in itself was a record year. The area covered by the count was more than twice the area in 2020, with significantly more birds counted. The National Sheep Association's policy and technical officer, Sean Riches, commented: “Lamb production supports rural communities as well as being a key player in delivering environmental stewardship schemes. Sheep can be effectively used for conservation grazing in areas that would be difficult to manage otherwise due to poor land quality or terrain. The use of livestock (particularly sheep) for conservation grazing is commonplace in national parks and ensures protection and access of these areas for the general public.

22 April 2021 |
Farmers have raised concerns over dog attacks amid an influx of countryside visitors during the pandemic
A new campaign will be launched focusing on the devastating issue of sheep worrying by dogs as cases increase at an 'alarming rate'.
The two week campaign titled #LeadOn will be launched at the end of this month by the National Sheep Association (NSA).
It will include social media activity, webinars, workshops, new online case studies and content for both farmers and the public.
The aim of the initiative is to help both sheep producers in reducing the risk of attacks happening on farm and the public in preventing their dogs from being involved.

Every spring farmers and crofters in parts of Scotland face the unsustainable situation of white-tailed eagles preying on healthy newborn lambs to feed their young.
NFU Scotland (NFUS) has demanded that the Scottish government’s nature agency NatureScot now takes real and meaningful action to control the birds that have come to see livestock as a food source.
White-tailed eagles, also known as sea eagles, were hunted to extinction in the UK in the early 20th century, but efforts to reintroduce the iconic birds to the west coast of Scotland in the 1970s and east coast in 2007 have been successful.
