John Seivert: Can vigorous exercise be good for a senior?

Columnist Health & Wellness Columnist John Seivert has his VO2max test performed by Bruce Hendler at Athleticamps in Folsom, California. The VO2max test is the primary test in examining aerobic fitness. Provided photo I am asked this question regularly. While every patient is unique, their overall health plays a big part in answering that question. I just turned 60 a few months ago, and when telling some friends about a regional mountain bike race I was competing in last weekend, one friend commented that “Shouldn’t I start to take it easy on my heart and back off the bike racing now that I am 60?” I didn’t’ want to fire back with scores of research studies stating the opposite. The evidence continues to mount that performing high-intensity interval training (HIIT) can improve fitness, help people lose weight, improve muscle mass, and add years to their lives. Let’s have a look at the research.

Prevalence of Electronic Cigarette Use Among Adult Workers — United St

What is already known about this topic? During 2014–2016, an estimated 5.2 million U.S. workers used e-cigarettes, and prevalence was high among certain industries and occupations. What is added by this report? During 2017–2018, an estimated 5.3 million (3.4%) U.S. workers used e-cigarettes, one half of whom also smoked combustible tobacco products. E-cigarette use was highest among males, non-Hispanic Whites, persons aged 18–24 years, combustible tobacco product users, and workers in the accommodation and food services industry and in food preparation and serving-related occupations. What are the implications for public health practice? Full implementation of targeted, evidence-based tobacco-control interventions that address the diversity of tobacco products used by U.S. adults, in coordination with regulation of tobacco product manufacturing, marketing, and sales, can reduce tobacco-related disease and death.

Menthol cigarettes linked to 10M more smokers

Menthol cigarettes contributed to 378,000 premature deaths in the United States between 1980 to 2018, according to a new study. The research also shows that about 10 million smokers were attributable to menthol cigarettes, which researchers estimate accounted for about 3 million life years lost. “Our results indicate that mentholated tobacco products have had a significant impact on public health and could continue to pose a substantial health risk,” says David Mendez, an associate professor in the health management and policy department at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. “We hope these data will help the Food and Drug Administration evaluate the potential regulatory actions for mentholated tobacco products.”

The study also shows that about 10 million smokers were attributable to menthol cigarettes, which researchers estimate accounted for about 3 million life years lost. In the study, the researchers used a well-established model in conjunction with National Health Interview Survey data and other public data sources to reproduce the overall U.S. adult smoking prevalence between 1980 and 2018 and associated mortality.
