Research Highlights:
A meta-analysis of 14 air pollution studies from around the world found that exposure to high levels of air pollutants during childhood increases the likelihood of high blood pressure in children and adolescents, and the risk of hypertension later in life.
A special publication on air pollution features several studies focused on the relationship between ambient air pollution with cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension.
Other studies cover exposure to diesel exhaust, ambient air pollution and particulate matter and how it affects blood pressure, heart failure admissions and risk of stroke and heart attack.

BEIJING, May 4 (Xinhua) Chinese researchers have discovered a new mechanism to develop non-volatile memory devices with ultrahigh speed, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), said on Tuesday.
The development of high-performance memory devices has played a key role in modern electronic innovation. Non-volatile memory devices, including read-only memory (ROM) and flash memory, have high capacity and mechanical reliability. But their performance has been hampered by low extinction ratio and low operational speed.
A research team from the Institute of Physics developed non-volatile floating-gate memory devices with ultrahigh speed, based on van der Waals heterostructures with atomically sharp interfaces between different functional elements, with extinction ratio up to 10 billion.
but the institute worked with military leaders on a government-sponsored project for almost a decade.
The Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) participated in a project, sponsored by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) a regime-funded scientific research institution from 2012 to 2018.
The project was comprised of a team of five military and civil experts, who conducted research at WIV labs, military labs, and other civil labs leading to “the discovery of animal pathogens [biological agents that causes disease] in wild animals.”
The WIV is located in central China’s Wuhan City, the COVID-19 pandemic ground zero. As an advanced virology institution, the WIV has the only P4 lab the highest biosafety level lab in China

Biological organisms (such as elephant trunks, octopus tentacles, and human tongues) show remarkable dexterity and self-adaptation in unstructured environments, relying on the multiple-mode actuations of the skeleton-free muscular hydrostats. In general, muscular hydrostats mainly consist of well-ranged active 3D muscle-fiber arrays bundled by passive connective tissues (Fig. 1A). By selectively actuating the active 3D muscle-fiber arrays, muscular hydrostats can generate elongation, bending, contraction and twisting. Producing such multiple-mode actuation of muscular hydrostats is an interesting but long-lasting challenge in the field of robotics.

Polarization-sensitive photodetectors, based on anisotropic semiconductors, have exhibited wide advantages in specialized applications, such as astronomy, remote sensing, and polarization-division multiplexing. For the active layer of polarization-sensitive photodetectors, recent researches focus on two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites, where inorganic slabs and organic spacers are alternatively arranged in parallel layered structures. Compared with inorganic 2D materials, importantly, the solution accessibility of hybrid perovskites makes it possible to obtain their large crystals at low cost, offering exciting opportunities to incorporate crystal out-
