Cuomo Signs New York Gun Bill
January 15, 2013
Andrew Cuomo, who aspires to the US presidency, beat Barack Obama to the gun control door today and signed a new gun bill called SAFE, Secure and Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act.
There are good provisions in the bill but it also includes measures that impinge on peoples’ freedoms.
New York already had the toughest laws in the nation, but they sometimes hurt the very people they are meant to protect.
For example, it is illegal to defend yourself with a gun in New York. You can’t carry a gun. You have some rights in your own home. If someone breaks into your home, crosses the threshold, and is facing you, you can shoot him/her/them. Other than that, it is a potential first degree murder charge.
NICS Gun Check Figures Surpass any April in History Last month was the highest April in terms of federal background checks for gun transfers since the system was established over two decades ago. The unadjusted data of 3,485,016 checks conducted through the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System for April 2021 is a 21.1 percent jump from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 2,878,176 in April 2020. When the data is filtered by the National Shooting Sports Foundation to remove figures for gun permit checks by states which use NICS for that purpose, the number of checks stands at 1,694,118, which is a slim increase of about 1 percent compared to the April 2020 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,678,223. While that sounds uninspiring, keep in mind that last April was by far a record for the program, meaning that even a small increase beyond that is significant when compared to past buying patterns.

How gun bill from Andrew Clyde would change time requirements for background checks Andrew Clyde
Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Athens, hopes his new gun legislation can speed up federal background checks to make the transfer of firearms from licensed dealers to buyers easier.
Clyde, owner of the gun store Clyde Armory in Athens, introduced House Resolution 1787 on March 11. The measure would speed up the waiting period for the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check on gun sales from three business days to three calendar days.
Prospective gun buyers are required under a permanent provision in the 1993 Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act to undergo a National Instant Criminal Background Check.
