Infrastructure decisions should discount short term projections on post-Covid demand

Shift to home working during the pandemic has led to questions being raised about the business cases for new infrastructure but the National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) has said that public surveys and initial responses are not reliable guides to shifts in mass behaviour post-Covid. According to a new report from the NIC, the social, economic and physical connections that brought cities together before the pandemic are still strong and it is too early to assume that long term behaviour change will lead to wholly different patterns of infrastructure use. In its Behaviour change and infrastructure beyond Covid-19 report, the NIC calls for projects to take an adaptive or phased approach to delivery where there is uncertainty around demand rather than delaying decisions indefinitely.

Focus on design is critical as the optimism grows

By Sadie Morgan2021-05-11T05:00:00+01:00 Confidence is returning to the industry. We must use the renewed energy to ensure that we build in a responsible and resilient way, says Sadie Morgan  Towards the end of March, the UK paused to look back at 12 months of restrictions connected to the covid-19 pandemic – a global experience that redesigned the way we live. Yet, as we enter the last leg of spring, brighter days have rolled in. The country’s vaccination programme and planned easing of restrictions have given legitimate cause for optimism, and this sense of hope has been reflected in the construction industry.

Infrastructure body to launch consultation this year

The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) is to launch a consultation on the UK’s second National Infrastructure Assessment this autumn. The body announced the consultation as part of its new corporate plan covering the next three years. It also includes a commitment to publish the UK’s second infrastructure assessment by the second half of 2023. The NIC said its project will begin with publication of a baseline analysis of the current state of each of key infrastructure sectors. This data-led analysis will be published in the autumn, alongside the NIC’s proposals for the strategic themes and main priorities it intends to explore in the next assessment.
