Date Time National Children’s Commissioner consulting with children, young people and their families The National Children’s Commissioner, in collaboration with the Department of Social Services, has been consulting with children, young people, and families on how to keep children safe and healthy in their homes and in their communities. Keeping kids safe and well – your voices is a national consultation project which will inform the first five-year implementation plan to the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children (2009-2020) successor plan, currently being developed by all Australian governments. The consultation has a focus on what helps to keep children safe and well in their homes and in their communities, and what policy and service systems need to change.

Community Services Ministers Meeting Communiqué 9 April

Community Services Ministers’ (CSM) met in Adelaide and via teleconference on 9 April 2021. Ministers primarily discussed the successor plan to the National Framework for Protecting Australia’s Children 2009-2020 (successor plan) and considered strategic priorities for collective effort under the successor plan. Ministers agreed in principle to the following priorities for the successor plan: Addressing the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in child protection systems. A national approach to early intervention and targeted support for children and families experiencing vulnerability or disadvantage. This includes strengthening the interface between services across jurisdictions including disability, early childhood education and care, health and mental health, drug and alcohol, domestic violence, justice, housing, and employment service systems.

Premier of Tasmania Commission of Inquiry formally established I am pleased to announce that yesterday, 15 March 2021, Her Excellency Professor the Honourable Kate Warner AC as Governor-in Council, signed the Order to formally establish the Commission of Inquiry into Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings. That Order formally established the Honourable Marcia Neave AO as President of the Commission, and appointed two other Commissioners to assist her with the Inquiry, namely Professor Leah Bromfield and former Family Court Justice the Honourable Robert Benjamin AM. Professor Leah Bromfield is one of Australia’s foremost child protection researchers. She is a Co-Director at the Australian Centre for Child Protection and was the Professorial Fellow to the
