NGCP seeks inputs to update transmission dev t plan – Manila Bulletin

Published March 1, 2021, 6:30 AM Transmission firm National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) has been engaging industry stakeholders for inputs into the 20-year transmission development plan (TDP) that it is currently crafting to guarantee reliable electricity services, including the need to spare consumers from suffering unwarranted blackouts. The company has shifted its ongoing public consultation process for the TDP through a virtual platform given the continued quarantine protocols being enforced in all parts of the country. NGCP said it has been seeking inputs from all relevant industry players and stakeholders in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao grids for the 2021-2040 TDP; and it carried out virtual public consultations within January to February this year.

WESM forecasts spike in summer power demand

Published February 26, 2021, 1:49 PM With cyclical temperature rise, the operator of the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) is forecasting demand increases during the summer months, primarily around April to May this year. Nevertheless, according to Engineer John Paul Grayda, manager for pricing validation and analysis of WESM’s Independent Electricity Market Operator of the Philippines (IEMOP), the upswing in demand would still be below pre-pandemic level, given the lingering quarantine protocols still enforced by the government. For the month of April, demand is projected to climb to 11,821 megawatts, which would be higher by 1,788MW compared to last year’s demand of 10,033MW on the same month.

Safeguard power sector stability and consumers

BusinessWorld February 23, 2021 | 6:24 pm By Victor Andres C. Manhit Before the COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic, the country’s grid system operator, National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), reported a looming power shortage over the Luzon grid in the summer months of 2020. However, COVID-19 happened. The lockdowns implemented to slow the spread of the virus sent severe shocks throughout the country’s economic sectors. As a result, the Department of Energy (DoE) later revealed that electricity consumption dropped by 30% in Luzon during the initial quarantine, effectively avoiding last year’s looming summer power shortage. An unintentional effect of the deep economic slump brought about by the continuing quarantine is that it bought the country’s energy sector additional time to realign with the country’s shifting power demands.

Mindanao-Visayas power grid link faces delay

Mindanao-Visayas power grid link faces delay February 19, 2021 | 12:07 am NGCP cites damaged fiber optic submarine cables A CRUCIAL transmission project that will link the separate power grids of Visayas and Mindanao may not be completed by the end-2021 target date after portions of fiber optic submarine cables were damaged, the grid system operator said on Thursday. Privately owned National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in a press release said that it might miss its schedule for the Mindanao-Visayas Interconnection Project (MVIP), which was already pushed back after recent travel restrictions. The project would connect the grids in Mindanao and Visayas, allowing excess power from both areas to be exported where it is needed, thus helping avoid shortages or thinning reserves.
