The 2019 Long-Term Climate Risk Index, released at the annual climate summit in Poland by Germanwatch, listed the island nation after Puerto Rico, the worst affected country in the world which recorded nearly 3000 deaths due to natural disasters. The Index had analysed as to what extent the countries have been affected by impacts of weather-related catastrophies such as floods, landslides, storms, heat waves from 1998 to 2017.

Daily Mirror - Rainy condition likely to subside: Met Dept

The prevailing rainy conditions in the Northern, Eastern and North-Central provinces are expected to subside temporarily in the next few days, the Department of Meteorology said. Several spells of shower will occur in the Northern, Eastern, North-Central and Uva provinces and in the Nuwara-Eliya district. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places in elsewhere after 1.00 pm. Fairly heavy deluge above 100 mm could be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Western and Southern provinces, the Department said. Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) said that people living in Bulathsinghala in Kalutara, Dehiowita in Kegalle, Ayagama and Kahawatta in Ratnapura and Kotapola in the Matara District should be vigilant over possible landslides, since the rainfall within the past 24 hours has exceeded 75mm.

The Met Department has identified the Central province and Badulla, Ampara, and Batticaloa districts as “high risk” areas. Heavy rainfalls exceeding 100 mm are likely at some places. Meanwhile, the Landslide Early Warning issued to four Divisional Secretariats of the Kandy, Matale, and Nuwara-Eliya districts will continue to remain in effect. The National Building Research Organisation had issued the warning taking into account the prevailing showery conditions.
