Alabama woman designed the first operational windshield wiper By Michael Sznajderman Alabamian Mary Anderson is credited with the first design of an automotive windshield wiper. (contributed) The next time you’re straining to steer safely through a sudden thunderstorm, give thanks to the Alabama woman whose clever idea made the path forward a little easier. Mary Anderson (1866-1953) is credited with designing the first operational windshield wiper, and she had the patent to prove it. Anderson was born just after the Civil War on a family plantation in Greene County. After her father’s death, the family moved to Birmingham in 1889, according to an account of her life in the Encyclopedia of Alabama.

Camp Invention returns this summer

In partnership with the National Inventors Hall of Fame (NIHF), Fountain Hills Unified School District will offer the nationally acclaimed Camp Invention program to K-6 children as both an at-home and in-person experience this year. In this weeklong summer adventure, children rotate through several hands-on activities and use creative thinking, collaboration and problem-solving skills to bring their biggest ideas to life. Two years after her passing, the Bath family has carried on her legacy by launching a campaign to get her inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame. If elected, Bath would become the first Black woman to enter the hall of fame. In honor of Black History Month, the National Inventors Hall of Fame encourages the public to nominate an African-American inventor for consideration in their current class of inductees, Bath s official Twitter account tweeted. Bath is a trailblazer in the world of ophthalmology. In 1975, she became the first Black woman to be appointed to UCLA s surgical staff. She also became the first woman to lead UCLA s post-graduate training program in ophthalmology. During her career, she went on to earn five U.S. patents.
