Published on Feb 24, 2021 5:09pm A drawing of the proposed Type 26 frigate (BAE Systems Canada) Construction of a new fleet of frigates for the Royal Canadian Navy, estimated to cost $26.2 billion in 2008, could balloon to as much as $82 billion, according to an analysis by Canada’s government-spending watchdog. The parliamentary budget officer (PBO) was asked by the House of Commons Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates to review the costs of continuing with a contract to build the British-designed Type 26 frigate, proposed by Lockheed Martin Canada Inc. and BAE Systems. The PBO was also asked to assess the purchase of two alternative designs: the comparable Italian-French FREMM frigate, and the lower-cost British Type 31 design.
