Two UF professors elected to National Academy of Inventors
Two members of the UF community were named as Fellows of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI), the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.
Emeritus professor of anesthesiology Richard Melker and professor of obstetrics and gynecology Gregory Schultz were recognized for their spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development and the welfare of society.
Richard Melker, who co-founded the medical technology company Xhale® Inc. in Gainesville in 2005, was chosen for his prolific biomedical inventions. Those include his first and most successful – the Melker Emergency Cricothyrotomy Catheter Set for emergency airway access licensed in 1985 by Cook Medical, which continues to be used frequently today worldwide – and numerous devices to improve patient monitoring. Bill McCutchen, Ph.D., Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center director at Stephenville, has been made a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors, NAI.
McCutchen will be honored at the NAI’s induction ceremony in June in Tampa.
“As an inventor, Dr. McCutchen has over 70 U.S. patents to his credit,” said Patrick J. Stover, Ph.D., vice chancellor of Texas A&M AgriLife, dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and director of Texas A&M AgriLife Research. “As a leader, he has been a valuable force in the university’s and agency’s efforts in identifying potential novel discoveries and protecting intellectual property.”
Two Ohio State scientists elected to National Academy of Inventors
New Fellows are faculty in the College of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences
Monica Giusti, professor of food science and technology, and Judit Puskas, professor of food, agricultural and biological engineering, join a class of 175 academic innovators representing universities and governmental or nonprofit research institutes named to the Fellows program this year. They are the 11th and 12th Ohio State inventors to be chosen as NAI Fellows.
“The work done by our newest NAI Fellows demonstrates the breadth of research expertise that can be found at Ohio State – and, in this instance, within a single college,” said Morley O. Stone, senior vice president for research.
