Vigil to honor victims of crime in Kent County

Thursday, April 22 Silent Observer and the Kent County Victim Witness Unit will be holding a community prayer and candlelight vigil to honor victims of crime.  The vigil starts at 6 p.m. outside the 63rd District Court, 1950 E. Beltline NE.  Kent County Sheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young, Prosecutor Chris Becker and Jerline Riley, a Grand Rapids resident who lost her son to homicide, are expected to speak. There will also be music by Singer Lori VerMerris.   The names of victims of crime who would like to be remembered or recognized will be read out loud. Anyone wising to submit a name should email info@silentobserver.org with that information by April 19. Additionally, you can contact Silent Observer at 616.454-9110 with any questions. 

Nicollet County OKs separation agreement | News, Sports, Jobs

fbusch@nujournal.com ST. PETER Nicollet County commissioners unanimously approved a separation agreement with human resources director/assistant county administrator Jamie Haefner Tuesday. Action came without discussion on a motion by Commissioner Marie Dranttel, seconded by Commissioner Jack Kolars. On April 2, commissioners accepted Haefner’s resignation. Under the agreement, in exchange for the release of claims, the County shall pay Haefner her regular salary at her final rate of pay, dental, and health insurance contributions through June 25, beginning the pay period after her right to rescind her release of all claims expires. Haefner is deemed to have elected COBRA coverage effective April 2. No additional leave benefits shall accrue following her March 25 resignation date.

Solano Board of Supervisors stands up for victims of crime, sexual assault FAIRFIELD Solano County supervisors on Tuesday adopted resolutions recognizing April 18-24 as National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in Solano County and the month of April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. Supervisor Monica Brown emphasized not only the emotional toll caused by crime, but the monetary costs as well. “. . . (A)nnually, rape costs the U.S. more than any other crime ($127 billion), followed by assault ($93 billion), murder ($71 billion), and drunk driving, including fatalities ($61 billion),” the resolution states. District Attorney Krishna Abrams noted that while protecting defendants’ rights and justice reform are important, she said it is critical never to forget the crime victims.
