During Chun’s tenure, Coug sports reached NCAA Championships in six sports, with student-athletes earning 35 All-American certificates, 100 All-Conference and 461 Academic All-Conference selections and five conference champions.
According to the university, Chun was hired as athletic director in 2018 the first Asian American to head athletics for a Power 5 school. Chun was also the first Coug named Under Armour AD of the Year.

PULLMAN, Wash. Washington State University President Kirk Schulz announced today that he has extended the contract of WSU Athletic Director Pat Chun through 2026. Chun was hired as WSU’s 14th athletic director in February 2018.
“Pat has done an exceptional job of leading our athletics program during the past three years,” Schulz said. “He has proven himself to be one of the nation’s most influential Power 5 athletic directors, guiding Cougar Athletics to success not only in athletic competition but also in the classroom, in fundraising and in creating innovative programs to benefit the welfare of our student-athletes. The Hawaii football program is attempting to retrofit the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex before the start of the 2021 season, which is no easy task. They are trying to renovate the stadium from 3,500 seats to 10,000 seats. The expected cost is about $8.3 million. Can the program complete the task in time? Time will tell.
The big schools aren t doing any better when it comes to giving Black coaches a chance.
Even after a year of jarring social upheaval and demands for racial justice, none of the Power Five schools hired an African-American head coach for the first time since 2015.
There were seven openings.
All were filled by white coaches.
The Caucasian sweep was completed this week when Tennessee introduced Josh Heupel to salvage its dumpster fire of a program.
The other Power Five vacancies were filled by Jedd Fisch (Arizona), Bryan Harsin (Auburn), Bret Bielema (Illinois), Shane Beamer (South Carolina), Steve Sarkisian (Texas) and Clark Lea (Vanderbilt).
