Fears schools will be overwhelmed by laptopless pupils

BBC News By Hannah Richardson image captionWork to get pupils connected in Wolverhampton is well under way There are concerns some schools in lockdown could be inundated with pupils without laptops after a change to the vulnerable pupil list. Pupils are learning remotely in England after schools were closed on Tuesday to all but children of key workers and those deemed vulnerable. But those without laptops or space to study are now eligible to attend school, under government guidance. Heads union, NAHT, said the move could reduce the effect of the shutdown. Schools were ordered to close to most pupils as a way of limiting the spread of the virus.

More Pupils At School Than During Last Shutdown, Say Teachers Teachers say England’s lockdown is at risk of being watered down, with more pupils still attending school than expected after the government said that those without laptops are exempt from obligatory home learning. Alongside other rules, England’s third national lockdown stipulates that children cannot attend school unless their parents are classified as keyworkers or they are identified as vulnerable. However, the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) says that demand for such exceptions is higher than during the previous school shut down in the spring of last year.

Mark Bain: Mr Weir gave test every chance amid pandemic now calls will only grow to ditch it completely

Never before in the history of the transfer test has the system of academic selection come under more scrutiny. Always an emotive topic, the merits of placing students in grammar schools has long been a tradition in Northern Ireland, but many recoil at the idea of testing children aged 10 and 11 at a time before many are ready to cope with the challenge and pressure the testing process brings with it.
