The President of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria, Dr Femi Egbesola, has said if fuel subsidy was finally removed, it would lead to a big crisis for small businesses.
He said this in an interview with
Sunday PUNCH.
Egbesola said at the moment, only about 10 per cent of small businesses were surviving, adding that many had closed shops because they didn’t have the wherewithal to produce again. He also said the capital of many small businesses had been eroded by inflation and high exchange rate.
He said, “A lot of small businesses will be affected. In fact, I’m also thinking of closing one of my factories. When we have fuel subsidy removed, I can’t imagine what would happen.

•NLC meets Tuesday to take decision on govs’ proposal
Nigerians may be spending N588.24bn monthly for Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, should the Federal Government implement the recommendation of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum that the cost of the commodity be increased.
A committee set up by the Nigeria Governor’s Forum had last Wednesday recommended that petrol price should be between N380/litre and N408.5/litre. They also called for the immediate removal of petrol subsidy.
Although the Federal Government on Friday said it would not increase petrol price in June despite the recommendation of the NGF, it had repeatedly said there was no going back on the imminent removal of petrol subsidy.

Abiodun Nejo, Ado Ekiti
The National Association of Nigerian Students on Sunday urged the Federal Government to declare and treat abductors of schoolchildren as terrorists.
NANS National President, Sunday Asefon, who said the incessant kidnapping of pupils particularly Friday’s abduction of over 300 schoolgirls in Zamfara State was an indictment on the failure of our nation’s security apparatus to withstand the threat of terrorists, called for a change of approach.
Asefon made the call in a statement titled, ‘NANS frowns at incessant kidnapping of school kids, says security of students no longer guaranteed, calls on Federal Government to treat school kidnappers as terrorists’ made available in Ado Ekiti.
The crash reportedly occurred when a Dangote truck carrying cement lost control owing to brake failure and rammed into business centres and shops near the institution’s gate, leaving many people dead and others injured.
A former students’ union president of the university and final year Law student, Adesomoju Tobi, was among the victims.
The university’s management on Sunday ordered closure of the institution till further notice.
Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Olugbenga Ige, who visited the scene, commiserated with the victims’ families, describing the incident as a tragedy.
Meanwhile, the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi, according to a statement on Sunday by FRSC spokesman, Bisi Kazeem, had deployed safety engineers to Akungba, Ondo State, to ascertain the causes and to incessant trailer crashes that have bedeviled that particular route of the highway and recommend solutions.
