MCCSC disarming SROs draws criticism from NASRO, praise from expert

The Herald-Times The Monroe County Community School Corp. school board approved disarming school resource officers (SROs) at a regular board meeting last week. Board member Martha Street cast the lone no vote.  The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) and the Indiana School Resource Officers Association (INSROA) jointly issued a public statement firmly opposing the decision, but others are in favor of it. The MCCSC currently has two armed SROs who are police officers who work within the entire school district. The district also has 13 security guards who are not armed.  D.J. Schoeff, president of the National Association of School Resource Officers, works for the Carmel Police Department in Indiana and is a school resource officer in Carmel Clay Schools, where he has been a supervisor of the SROs there for the past three years.
