A caseload swelled by the COVID-19 pandemic has created a need for more staff at the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s office.
Out of more than 76 million doses of coronavirus vaccines administered throughout the country in the first 2 1/2 months, the federal surveillance system received 1,381 reports of death among people who had received a shot. But CDC and Food and Drug Administration physicians have so far found no evidence in their reviews that a vaccination contributed to a death.

LEESBURG – Four area residents who tested positive for COVID-19 are among the latest-reported deaths attributed to the coronavirus, according to Wednesday’s update from the Florida Department of Health.
The latest-reported fatalities – one in Lake County and three in Sumter – raise the area’s COVID-related death toll to 808, including 567 in Lake and 241 in Sumter.
Details about recent local deaths were not immediately available, due to a change in the way the DOH reports fatalities on its website. DOH offices in Tallahassee and in Lake County did not respond to emails seeking information.
However, based on guidance provided by the CDC, deaths are considered COVID-19 related if doctors, medical examiners or coroners determine the coronavirus was a primary or contributing factor. To help with that determination, a COVID-19 test can be given posthumously, especially if a person had not been tested prior to death.

The latest-reported fatalities raise the area’s COVID-related death toll to 804, including 566 in Lake and 238 in Sumter.
