LEESBURG – Four area residents who tested positive for COVID-19 are among the latest-reported deaths attributed to the coronavirus, according to Wednesday’s update from the Florida Department of Health. The latest-reported fatalities – one in Lake County and three in Sumter – raise the area’s COVID-related death toll to 808, including 567 in Lake and 241 in Sumter. Details about recent local deaths were not immediately available, due to a change in the way the DOH reports fatalities on its website. DOH offices in Tallahassee and in Lake County did not respond to emails seeking information. However, based on guidance provided by the CDC, deaths are considered COVID-19 related if doctors, medical examiners or coroners determine the coronavirus was a primary or contributing factor.
