Role of journalists lauded in peace restoration Peshawar April 14, 2021 SWABI: National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser on Tuesday lauded the role of the journalists in the restoration of peace in the country. Speaking as chief guest at the oath-taking ceremony of the Swabi Electronic and Print Media Association here, he said that Pakistan was striving for peace in war-ravaged Afghanistan to boost trade with Central Asian Republics (CARs). Asad Qaiser said that peace in Afghanistan was a prerequisite for increasing trade with CARs because the trade land route passed through landlocked country. He said that Pakistan was working for peace and wanted all stakeholders, including the Afghan government, to resolve their issues through talks. He added that the restoration of peace to Afghanistan would be beneficial for the Afghans and the entire region.

White Star LAHORE: Leaders from across the political spectrum, several civil society members and cultural bodies mourned the loss of the country’s most prolific and iconic journalist and a long-time human rights champion, Ibn Abdur Rehman, commonly known as I.A. Rehman, who passed away here on Monday morning. Rehman sahib was 90 and suffering from various health issues such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The HRCP, in a statement, said it was devastated at the loss of its honorary spokesperson and former secretary general. Rehman served as the commission’s director from 1990 to 2008 before being elected its secretary general in 2008 a post he held till 2016. He was also a co-founder of the Pakistan-India People’s Forum for Peace and Democracy, a bureau member of South Asians for Human Rights and former chairperson of the South Asian Forum for Human Rights.

Despite boost in its numerical strength, no smooth sailing expected for govt in Senate National April 11, 2021 ISLAMABAD: Only seven government bills are pending in the Senate where the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) plans to conduct aggressive legislation after its numerical strength improved following the March election to half of the upper house. However, despite its greater strength, the ruling coalition is not likely to enjoy smooth sailing in the Senate. An indication of this came when a resolution sponsored by an opposition senator was recently passed, defeating the government that opposed it. The motion related to the prices of COVID-19 vaccines being provided to the people on a commercial basis.
