U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg has designated Robert C. Hampshire, Ph.D., as Acting Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology, and officially as Chief Science Officer. Hampshire will serve as the principal advisor to Buttigieg on science and technology issues, “ensuring that USDOT’s RD&T (Research, Development & Technology) programs are scientifically and technologically well-founded and conducted with integrity,” DOT said. The rules in OAC Chapter 3745-79 establish the small business technical assistance program. The program created by these rules and ORC 3704.18 helps small businesses understand and comply with air pollution regulations. Ohio EPA is reviewing the rules as part of its general review to fulfill the requirements of ORC 106.03 and ORC 106.031 (5-year review). But despite progress, the EPA says approximately 82 million people in 2019 lived in U.S. counties where the air quality was beyond healthy levels, or National Ambient Air Quality Standards, as dictated by the EPA and mandated by the Clean Air Act. In the U.S, some states feature better air and water quality than others, and some have policies to support green initiatives and exhibit other eco-friendly behaviors such as alternative energy sources and recycling policies. Hawaii ranks No. 1 for its natural environment, according to the 2021 U.S. News Best States rankings, which considers metrics such as air and water quality and pollution levels.
