Massive X-class solar flare erupted from sun

Massive X-class solar flare erupted from sun SDO/NASA By Megan Marples and Ashley Strickland, CNN The first large flare of the current solar cycle has erupted from the sun. The solar flare happened at sunspot AR2838 at 10:29 a.m. ET on July 3, according to the US Space Weather Prediction Center. Researchers at the center measure the intensities of solar flares on a scale, with A-class flares being the smallest and X-class flares being the largest. The scientists classified the July 3 flare as an X1, which is the largest category of solar flares. Solar flares are large eruptions of radiation on the surface of the sun, said Bill Murtagh, program coordinator at the US SWPC.

This new image reveals a sunspot in unrivaled detail

The largest solar telescope on Earth has gotten the sharpest glimpse ever of a sunspot. Vaguely resembling a sunflower or the Eye of Sauron from The Lord of the Rings the spot appears as a dark blemish wreathed by ribbons of plasma that have been sculpted by magnetic fields sprouting from the spot’s center. At roughly 15,000 kilometers across, the entire spot could comfortably engulf Earth with room to spare. The image was captured last January by the new Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope on Maui in Hawaii, observatory director Thomas Rimmele and colleagues report in the December 4 SN: 1/29/20). The ability to see details as small as 20 kilometers across may help researchers get at the root of enduring mysteries about the sun (
