CHINESE educationist groups and educators have urged the government to look into the shortage of teachers for vernacular schools, including Tamil schools, in the
wake of the Education Ministry’s announcement that it was hiring 18,000 schoolteachers this year.
Sin Chew Daily quoted Deputy Education Minister Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon (pic) as saying he has had meetings with groups including Dong Zong, Jiao Zong, the Chinese Language Council, the National Union of Heads of Schools and the Malaysian Conforming Secondary Schools Principals Council since the announcement was made last week, to discuss the perennial staffing problems faced by schools in the country.

HONG Kong singer Andy Hui has been spotted in Taipei and is said to be attempting to make a comeback after the scandal of his extramarital affair two years ago.
Sin Chew Daily reported that Hui, 53, is slated to be involved in a TV series, The Producer in Taiwan and to sing its opening theme.
He was photographed arriving at the Taoyuan International Airport on Saturday accompanied by a male assistant.
Hui appeared to be in good spirits, responding to all the questions by reporters at the airport.
He said he would be in Taiwan for about a month due to work commitments.

THE National Union of Heads of Schools has urged the Education Ministry to allow headmasters to be given autonomy to open their schools in stages, reported China Press.
In an interview, the union’s newly appointed president Lim Bee Khim said she hoped that Year One pupils would be given priority to attend school to get used to the new environment.
“As schools are not allowed to hold welcoming days for our new pupils, they would not have time to get to know the school, the teachers, their classmates, their classrooms and even their seating.
