Acting general secretary of the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW), Wayne Walrond, says his organisation is deeply concerned about Government’s use of independent contractors.
He said the nature of these work arrangements has left some of them without any social security protection.
Pointing out that those contracted to clean up the ash in the aftermath of the La Soufriere eruption in St Vincent, was an example of this type of work arrangement.
Walrond told the Sunday Sun that several of these workers had attempted to register as self-employed with the National Insurance Scheme (NIS), but were told their terms of work did not fit the criteria of an independent contractor, but rather that of the employer employee relationship. (CLM)
