Among children with uncontrolled, moderate-to-severe asthma, treatment with the biologic dupilumab (Dupixent) was associated with a reduction in exacerbation and improvements in lung function in phase III findings from the international VOYAGE trial.
Evidence of lung function improvement occurred within 2 weeks of treatment initiation, and was sustained during the 52-week randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
Compared with the placebo group, dupilumab-treated children (ages 6 to 11 years) showed a 59% reduction in exacerbations, along with improvements in forced expiratory volume (FEV
1) and reduced airway inflammation, as measured by fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), reported VOYAGE lead researcher Leonard Bacharier, MD, of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Your heart is the beating center of your circulatory system. It pumps blood rich with oxygen and nutrients to the rest of your body, which keeps your brain, kidneys, and other vital organs functioning as they should. And, if you keep your heart in tip-top shape, you’ll have a better chance that it and you function in great form for the long haul.
“Regular exercise and a healthy diet, like the Mediterranean diet, will help keep your cardiovascular risk factors, like high blood pressure and high cholesterol, in check,” says cardiologist Glenn Hirsch, M.D., of National Jewish Health in Denver.

® Baseball and Softball World Series events will be held, as scheduled, this August in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, and Greenville, North Carolina (respectively), featuring teams solely from the United States. Based on the recommendation of the 2021 Little League International Pandemic Response Advisory Commission, the Little League International Board of Directors approved a plan that incorporates a series of COVID-19 mitigation measures to host these tournaments in a healthy, responsible environment.
“Little League puts the health, well-being, and safety of all players and volunteers first, and we are looking forward to hosting the Little League Regional and World Series tournaments with that aim this summer,” said Dr. Daniel Lueders, Commission Chair, Little League International Board of Directors Member, and UPMC Sports Medicine Physician and Assistant Professor. “The Commission’s recommendations reflect the most curren

Genomic sequencing is one of the best defenses against potentially deadlier or more transmissible variants of the coronavirus. It’s also expensive, slow, and currently almost nonexistent in the United States.
So some epidemiologists are advocating for an easier, cheaper, and faster way to help track variants’ paths through the country: a souped-up version of widely available COVID-19 diagnostic tests that can flag samples with any problematic genetic tweaks.
The idea is to complement not to replace the U.S.’s slow-growing genomic sequencing capacity, since sequencing remains the gold-standard for virus surveillance. In Europe, the U.K. and Denmark already use these tests as part of their national virus-tracking systems. Several diagnostic testing companies, including Bio-Rad, Agena and Roche, have also developed their own variant-specific screens in recent months.
