Reuters New Delhi, December 31 A total of 25 people in the country have tested positive for the new UK variant genome of SARS-CoV-2 so far, the Union Health Ministry said on Thursday. These 25 people include the 20 who were found positive with the mutated strain on Tuesday and Wednesday. All 25 persons are in physical isolation in health facilities, the health ministry said.  Among the new five cases, the mutated UK strain was detected in four at the National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune and one new case was sequenced at the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology (IGIB), Delhi, it said.

The Centre on Thursday said that five more cases of the mutant Coronavirus from the UK have been detected in the country, taking the total tally of such cases to 25 so far. Out of the five new cases, four have been found by the National Institute of Virology in Pune and one by CSIR Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology in Delhi. All 25 persons are in physical isolation in health facilities, the Health Ministry said in a statement. Of the 20 other cases, eight have been registered at National Centre for Disease Control in Delhi, 7 at National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences in Bangalore, two at Cellular and Molecular Biology in Hyderabad.

The recovery rate stands at 95.99 per cent while the fatality rate is 1.45 as per cent, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare . COVID-19 has hit men harder than women in India, where 70 per cent of the approximately 1.47 lakh people who died since the national outbreak in January were male, the ministry has announced.
