PITTSBURGH, May 19, 2021 - Specialized immune cells that accumulate in the brain in the days and weeks after a stroke promote neural functions in mice, pointing to a potential immunotherapy that may boost recovery after the acute injury is over, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine neurologists found.

Rochelle Swanson, a nurse in Gretna, Nebraska, knew exactly what was happening early on Christmas morning in 2020. She had stopped by a storage unit to grab her husband’s gift before starting her shift in the stroke unit at the hospital where she works. She ended up arriving as a patient.
“I dropped the box I was holding and thought it was because it was heavy. I didn t realize that it was because my arm was flaccid. Right after that, I felt gravity pull the left side of my face down and my speech was garbled and slurred,” says Swanson. Despite being young just 39 years old she knew immediately that she was having a stroke.
