The government of Portugal has declared a state of emergency due to a surge in COVID’19, and ordered a complete two-week, strict lockdown for the whole country, effective Friday, Prime Minister António Costa announced on Wednesday.
The lockdown could be in place indefinitely, although, under Portuguese law, it will be reviewed every 15 days. The newly imposed rules most likely would last a month, said Prime Minister Costa.
Urging people to stay indoors and protect themselves, Prime Minister Costa warned, “We are at the most dangerous moment. The rule is simple: all of us should stay home.”
Argentina ended 2020 with a cumulative inflation rate of 36.1 percent year on year, after registering the biggest price increases of the year in December, the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) reported Thursday.

The South American country, which has been in a recession since mid-2018, managed to slow down the pace of inflation after it reached 53.8 percent in 2019 and 47.6 percent in 2018, said the agency.
However, according to INDEC data, prices of food, clothing and footwear, as well as recreational activities and transportation, rose by more than 30 percent from 2019.
December saw the year s highest monthly inflation, with a 4 percent increase in the price of goods and services.

According to INEI, the productive activity decreased by -12.39% in the January-November period of the analyzed year, whereas it did so by -11.16% in the annualized period (December 2019-November 2020).
The result in November was determined by lower production levels in the sectors: accommodation and restaurants (-41.31%); transportation, storage, and messaging (-21.88%); mining and hydrocarbons (-4.75%); manufacture (-4.19%); services provided to companies (-11.96%); commerce (-2.46%); fisheries (-0.68%); as well as electricity, gas, and water (-0.34%).

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 15 2021 (IPS) - While the world is grappling with the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, Peru is still dealing with an epidemic that it has not been able to control -the mosquito-borne viral disease known as dengue.
With almost 56,400 confirmed cases as of December, Peru is suffering the worst dengue epidemic since 2017, when the virus infected over 68,000 people. The illness, coupled with the novel coronavirus crisis, has left thousands of people exposed to malnutrition and water-borne diseases.
Although mortality rates are low for dengue cases, nutritious diets and immediate sanitary responses are needed to battle the condition. And, above all, prevention is key to handling future epidemics, given that the mosquito responsible for dengue, Aedes aegypti, is expanding to new territories in Peru.
