India s Koo eyes expansion in Nigeria after the country bans Twitter

The move comes after the microblogging site Twitter was banned in the African country.. “Now the platform is available in Nigeria. We re thinking of enabling the local languages there too. What say?,” co-founder and CEO Aprameya Radhakrishna asked Saturday. The federal government of Nigeria suspended the operations of Twitter indefinitely in the country on 4 June. Notably, the ban was announced two days after the microblogging site deleted an abusive tweet made by Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, and suspended his account for 12 hours.

Shibli Faraz visits National Institute of Electronics (NIE) - ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Federal Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz on Thursday visited the National Institute of Electronics (NIE) in Islamabad where he was briefed in detail regarding the working and initiatives of the institute. Shibli Faraz also reviewed the different products being developed by the institute and took a keen interest in numerous initiatives like smart electric metres, smart parking systems and FMCW (Frequency Modulation Continuous Wave) radars. In his remarks on the occasion, the minister said that there are certain gaps in the functionality of NIE, like patent registration, lack of product development, and absence of commercial linkages with the industry due to which this institute has not achieved its true potential.

Govt probes ECAC appointments TRIBUNE CREATIVE ISLAMABAD: The government has started investigation into the appointment of members of the Electronic Certification Accreditation Information Technology Council (ECAC) without advertisement. The issue was raised in a recent meeting of the cabinet when the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecom sought approval for the appointment of ECAC members. However, the law minister blocked the appointments without placing advertisements in the media. During the meeting, the law minister pointed out that Section 18 of the Electronic Transactions Ordinance 2002 envisaged appointment of ECAC members by the federal government on prescribed terms and conditions. He said that any such appointments without advertisement would be cancelled by orders of the Supreme Court. He advised that the agenda item be deferred and the IT and telecom secretary should consult him on the issue.
