WATERTOWN â State Assemblyman Mark C. Walczyk and Sen. Patricia A. Ritchie are joining a Rochester-area state lawmaker in calling on Attorney General Letitia A. James to investigate the death of city firefighter Peyton Lane S. Morse, who died Friday from a medical emergency he suffered while training at the state fire academy almost two weeks ago.
On Tuesday, Assemblyman Josh Jensen, R,C,I-Greece, sent a letter to the attorney general requesting that her office investigate the circumstances surrounding the medical emergency suffered by Mr. Morse as he was completing a mask confidence exercise March 3 at the New York State Academy of Fire Science in Montour Falls, near Watkins Glen.

Some manufacturers that shifted their factories to make personal protective equipment in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic have reverted back to their primary products.
But Shawmut Corp., a fabric manufacturer based in West Bridgewater, is just getting started with its ambitious PPE production effort. Itâs an effort that could make Shawmut one of the largest producers of N95 masks in the country.
OSHA has launched a
national emphasis program to protect high-risk workers from COVID-19 hazards. The program also prioritizes for OSHA inspection employers that retaliate against workers who complain about unsafe conditions.
According to OSHA Deputy Assistant Secretary Jim Frederick, “This deadly pandemic has taken a staggering toll on U.S. workers and their families. We have a moral obligation to do what we can to protect workers, especially for the many who have no other protection. This program seeks to substantially reduce or eliminate coronavirus exposure for workers in companies where risks are high, and to protect workers who raise concerns that their employer is failing to protect them from the risks of exposure.”
WATERTOWN â Fire Chief Jeff VanBrocklin and members of the Watertown Fire Department were perched on the outer Massey Street overpass Monday afternoon to pay their respects while a procession brought city firefighter Peyton Morse home.
State troopers led the hearse along the 130-mile route from Binghamton to Cummings Funeral Home on Sterling Street.
Dozens of police and fire department vehicles joined along the way on Interstate 81. First responders lined up on other overpasses along the busy highway to honor him.
The motorcade brought the young fallen firefighter home from a hospital in Binghamton after he died Friday from a medical emergency he suffered while training at the state fire academy 12 days ago.

NIOSH Issues Advisory to Fire Departments on Natural Gas, Propane Incidents
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) issued a safety advisory to fire departments concerning fading odorants during natural gas and propane leaks.

NIOSH’s Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP) urged fire departments to ensure that firefighters responding to natural gas or propane incidents:
Use gas detection equipment and do not rely upon their sense of smell to determine if propane or natural gas is present.
Understand that the odorant in natural gas or propane can fade.
Are trained on the proper calibration, maintenance, and use of gas detection equipment to determine if a potential explosive atmosphere is present.
