CHARLESTON â The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) recently recognized 96 educators as part of this yearâs National Board Certification (NBC) Recognition Celebration. Due to COVID-19, the celebration was virtual. There were 64 new National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs) as well as 32 educators who successfully renewed their certification last year.
National Board Certification is the gold-standard credential for educators in the United States and symbolizes accomplished practice beyond licensure. The rigorous process â which can take three years to complete â includes four components: content knowledge; differentiation in instruction; teaching practice and learning environment; and effective/reflective practice.

PARKERSBURG The Wood County Board of Education announced the district’s 2022 Teacher of the Year, recognized new and renewed National Board Certified teachers and received an update on the Wood County Technical Center’s cosmetology program during a board meeting on Tuesday night.
Parkersburg South High School’s Sara Klesel was named the 2022 Teacher of the Year. Klesel has been a mathematics teacher at South for the past 10 years, with 15 years of teaching experience in total.
WVPB Heather Puglisi was presented WVPB s Above And Beyond excellence-in-teaching award this week at Warwood Elementary in Wheeling, West Virginia. She received a monetary award, our signature Blenko blue apple paperweight, a certificate of recognition, and a host of other special gifts made possible by the sponsorship of Advantage Technology.
Heather Puglisi, a second-grade teacher from Ohio County, has earned West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s Above and Beyond Award, which recognizes excellence and creativity in West Virginia teachers.
