Among the long-term changes brought on by the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic is the way the Delaware City School District provides food to its students.
When the pandemic led Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine to announce orders that the state s public schools close in March 2020, Delaware school district began providing free meals to families via curbside pickup.
When most school districts began returning at least some of their students to classrooms last fall, the U.S. Department of Agriculture waived all fees for its breakfast and lunch programs, providing the meals for free to every student, not only those on a free or reduced-price plan.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has extended waivers for the free meal program, meaning school districts in Bucks County and throughout the nation can continue providing what officials here say is a lifeline to students and families.
The waiver is now extended through June 30, 2022, and comes at the direction of the Biden Administration.
“USDA will remain relentless in ensuring our nation’s children get the critical nutrition they need,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “States and districts wanted waivers extended to plan for safe reopening in the fall. USDA answered the call to help America’s schools and childcare institutions serve high quality meals while being responsive to their local needs as children safely return to their regular routines.

Harrisburg, PA - The Pennsylvania departments of Education (PDE), Agriculture, and Human Services (DHS) announced today that thousands of students and families will continue to receive nutritious meals during the pandemic. The Biden Administration, through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Services Department, is extending or providing flexibilities to the National School Lunch Program, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and the Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT).
“We are pleased to hear about USDA s continued commitment to food security by creating opportunities for students and families to have access to resources that support nutritional needs through the next school year,” said Acting Secretary of Education Noe Ortega. “These programs create accessibility and offer relief to families during such an unpredictable time in our lives.
