European nations assisting with submarine project
RARE DISCLOSURE: The defense ministry said its submarine project was not receiving assistance only from the US, while denying North Korea had discussed helping Taiwan

European countries are helping with the indigenous submarine project, the Ministry of National Defense said, in a rare admission that the sensitive program is not receiving assistance solely from the US.
The US government in 2018 gave the green light for US manufacturers to participate in the program, a move widely seen as helping Taiwan secure major components, although it is unclear which US companies are involved.
In a statement late on Friday, the ministry denied a report in US-based magazine The National Interest, which cited Taiwanese news reports from 2019 as saying that North Korea had discussed helping Taiwan with the submarines.

Minister of National Defense Chiu Kuo-cheng (邱國正) yesterday reaffirmed the US’ approval of export licenses for “red zone” military technologies used in Taiwan’s indigenous submarine program, which he said has not changed since its initial approval in December last year.
The Ministry of National Defense has divided required components into three categories: “red” for imported technologies that the nation is unable to research and develop, or manufacture itself; “yellow” for parts that are difficult to obtain, but can be produced locally; and “green” for components that can be manufactured locally.

Trials of political cases reached their peak in the 1950s and Chiang Kai-shek (蔣介石) participated in more than 4,000 of them, the Transitional Justice Commission said on Friday.
In an event showcasing the accomplishments of the commission in establishing a database of politically motivated cases, commission Chairwoman Yang Tsui (楊翠) said that 13,268 cases have so far been compiled in the database, which was launched on Feb. 26 last year.
