Plans submitted to convert Shuttleworth church into two bedroom house

St John in the Wilderness, Shuttleworth A PLANNING application has been submitted to convert a disused Victorian church into a two bedroom home. St John in the Wilderness, in Whalley Road, Shuttleworth, was built in 1847, but closed its doors in 2017 after it could not raise the £250,000 necessary for repairs. The church was shut temporarily due to damage to its ceiling in 2016 when an architect’s inspection raised concerns that plaster was chipping away, posing a safety worry. Following consultations, it was decided that raising the money to pay for the repairs was not feasible. St John’s is not a nationally listed building but it is on the local Council list of buildings of special architectural or historic interest.

Mardale Green and Snittlegarth - what happened to Cumbria s lost villages?

Mardale Green and Snittlegarth are two villages in Cumbria that have been abandoned. Mardale Green Mardale Green is a sunken settlement that lies beneath Haweswater reservoir. It’s possible that you have been hiking in the area, walking past Haweswater reservoir without even realising that there is an abandoned hamlet sitting at the bottom of it. It only becomes visible to the public in the summer months and in severe droughts when the water disperses. The hump back bridge, first built in the 17th century, and the rough outline of the streets are the only recognisable remnants of the settlements.

Past and present photos of Harleyford Manor

IT’S a rare occurrence these days to find a postcard not already in my collection, but above left is one I came across just recently – an old etching used as an advertising card (postmarked 1949) for guest house facilities at Harleyford, just outside Marlow. I don’t think I had ever realised that they offered accommodation in past times. Here are a few other pictures, old and relatively new, the latest two being aerial views of the house, grounds, and marina. Top right is especially interesting – the Harleyford workforce, the probably early 1900s, and half of them enjoying a smoke.
