Dairy farmers requests hearing on Class I fluid milk price mover reform

NMPF The National Milk Producers Federation’s Board of Directors voted this week to request an emergency USDA hearing on a Federal Milk Marketing Order proposal to restore fairness for farmers in the Class I fluid milk price mover. The endorsement of the board, which represents dairy farmers and cooperatives nationwide, follows approval from the organization’s Executive Committee last week. The NMPF plan would ensure that farmers recover lost revenue and establish more equitable distribution of risk among dairy farmers and processors. The current mover was adopted in the 2018 farm bill and intended to be revenue neutral while facilitating increased price risk management by fluid milk bottlers.

Agriculture organizations sent a letter to U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Katherine Tai highlighting the great strides the U.S. ag industry has made toward environmental sustainability and climate goals and stressing the importance of voluntary, market and incentive-based policies to help rural economies better adapt to climate change. The letter comes in response to remarks that Tai made April 15 on “Trade Policy, the Environment and Climate Change.” Tai remarked that “climate-friendly and sustainable agricultural production is essential to meeting our climate and sustainability goals” and U.S. farmers and ranchers can lead the world with innovative carbon conservation practices.

Dairy farmer groups propose Class III Plus for better milk pricing

Dairy farmer groups propose Class III Plus for better milk pricing Four US Midwestern dairy groups have announced a Federal Milk Marketing Orders (FMMO) proposal aimed at creating long-term stability in fluid milk pricing and reducing the likelihood of negative producer price differentials that cut into farmers’ revenue last year during the pandemic. The proposal from the Dairy Business Association (DBA), Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative, Minnesota Milk and Nebraska State Dairy Association comes after the groups began studying options early this year. They said the proposal, Class III Plus, aims to build on the current pricing system, recent proposals by dairy cooperatives, and dairy farmer petitions to define a better Class I pricing system.

It would make lasting changes to the milk pricing system that will limit negative PPDs (Producer Price Differential) in the future and the possible negative effects from future crises,” DBA President Amy Penterman said.

By Travis Cleven Apr 29, 2021 5:27 AM The National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF) is taking some time to stand up for the dairy industry. Their goal is to share with people the importance of keeping dairy in their diet, even when some people argue that it’s not a big deal. NMPF’s Miquela Hanselman talked about some of the health benefits of dairy such as reduced inflammation, improved digestive health, and dairy can also help keep your immune system healthy. She explained that it’s especially important for pregnant women because dairy’s a source of iodine. Even if you’re a vegetarian, you should be consuming dairy products. “Especially because it’ll likely be the only animal-sourced protein, and animal-sourced proteins are known as complete proteins where they offer all of the amino acids humans need basically in one bite, so you don’t have to go to multiple sources,” Hanselman said.
