Calls to National Stalking Helpline rise by 11% during pandemic as perpetrators turn online Maya Oppenheim © Provided by The Independent Calls to the National Stalking Helpline rose by 11 per cent during the coronavirus pandemic as many perpetrators have turned online, new figures show. Data released exclusively to The Independent shows callers dealt with almost 18,000 calls from March 2020 until February this year - a substantial jump from the just over 16,000 calls the stalking helpline received in the same time period a year earlier. While the helpline handled 10,308 calls between June and October last year, which is an increase of 29 per cent from the same period during the year before.

Sussex second highest in country for stalking cases - police

POLICE in Sussex have recorded the highest number of stalking reports for anywhere in the country apart from London. Detective Chief Inspector Mick Richards of the force s Public Protection Command said officers are advising and supporting more victims than ever . It comes after a new law was passed last year which aims to give greater protection for victims of stalking. Sussex Police became the first force in the country to enforce a Stalking Protection Order (SPO) when the law came into effect in January 2020. In the past year there has since been 29 court orders in the county, and seven applications are currently awaiting court hearings.

Ingleton stalker who subjected victim to terrifying 18-month ordeal is jailed

A STALKER who subjected his victim to a terrifying 18-month ordeal has been sentenced to more than two years in prison. Mark Robert Stephens, from Ingleton, North Yorkshire, followed the victim as she went about her daily life and left her feeling terrified . During this time, she discovered her vehicle had been fitted with a tracking device upon taking it to a garage for a routine check. “Only now that he will be serving his prison sentence can she begin to rebuild her life, knowing that she is safe, said Detective Sergeant Ian Philips, of North Yorkshire Police (NYP). “The victim has shown a great deal of bravery in reporting this to the police, and we would encourage anyone who feels threatened by the behaviour of an individual or who is experiencing any form of stalking or harassment to get in touch with us.
